I am Tyler Kernodle and have been consistently practicing yoga for 2 1/2 years ever since my mother got me my first yoga mat for Christmas. I would watch Youtube videos of classes and use the Yoga Studio app on my iPhone. Now at school I occasionally go to yoga classes because back at home there wasn't a studio for me to join.
Yoga came naturally to me because I was classically trained ballerina for 13 years. I enjoyed the physical benefits of yoga when my body started became over stressed and temporarily paralyzed. Two summers ago I had to go to physical therapy to help with the pain in my lower half (back down to toes) from years of high intensity sports. I hated it. So I turned to doing yoga as a better way to help myself.
Yoga keeps me grounded, less stressed out and more focused now that I am at the University of Virginia. I am not perfect at it but one doesn't need to be. I believe in the spiritual benefits of it as through mediation. Yoga has definitely made me a better person with a better outlook on the universe.
Therefore, enough the sap story, please support my dream. I ultimately want to bring yoga to all people, young/old, rich/poor, healthy/sickly. I believe that places like Big Brother Big Sister, 9-5 Offices and families would benefit greatly from being introduced to yoga on a weekly basis. This is a way for me to give back to the community with something I am truly passionate about.
