More Info

On August 1-8 the Western Horn Quartet will be traveling to Los Angeles to attend the International Horn Symposium with our horn professor, Dr. Lin Foulk. Dr. Foulk and Nicole will be presenting a lecture/workshop on Classical Improvisation titled "Then and Now: Creating Music in the Moment" while the WHQ competes in the Symposium's Horn Quartet Competition.

The International Horn Symposium is a world wide event for horn players. It is held every summer in different cities. In the summer of 2013 the entire WMU Horn Studio went and it was held in Memphis, TN. Last year it was in London, England. Many students attend as well as professional horn players and makers from around world. If you would like to learn more about the Symposium itself, you can follow this link: http://www.ihsla2015.com

The WHQ is made of WMU's three horn graduate assistants, Jeremy Larson, Jennifer Kempe, and Kirstie Keill and one undergraduate student, Nicole Vanden Bosch. A link to a recording of one of our performances will be posted at a later time.

Our presentation of "Then and Now: Creating Music in the Moment" will lead participants through pretested improvisation games in large and small ensembles using their horn, voice, body percussion, or basic percussion instruments.  By playing music without notation, we are free to express ourselves through the music however we want to in accessible, encouraging, and fun ways.  Through these games, we will demonstrate the growing importance of classical improvisation in the modern classical tradition, the music education classroom, and how much fun improvisation can be.

The horn quartet and Dr. Foulk had an interview on WMUK about our trip, which you can listen to if you follow this link:  http://wmuk.org/post/lhi-live-friday-fun-wmus-horn-studio

In order for us to attend the Symposium we will need to cover expenses such as airfare, a rental car and gas, a place to sleep, food, and the cost of actually attending the Symposium itself.

Thank you for considering to help us get to Los Angeles this summer to present and perform at the International Horn Symposium!
